Measurement Guide
Getting your measurements right is the most important step. Every blind we make is cut to the exact size you enter, so take a few minutes to measure carefully. You can use inches or centimetres.
Tools you'll need
- Measuring tape (a steel tape is best)
- Pen and paper, or something to jot the measurements down
- Ladder (optional)
Step 1: Decide between inside or outside mount
Inside mount: Blinds fit inside the window frame for a clean, streamlined look. This is ideal for windows with deep recesses.
Outside mount: Blinds are mounted outside the window frame, either on the wall or trim. This style provides full coverage, making it perfect for windows with shallow frames or if you want to block out more light.
Step 2A: Measuring for inside mount blinds
Width: Measure inside the window frame at three points: the top, middle, and bottom. Use the narrowest measurement to ensure the blinds fit inside the frame perfectly.
Height: Measure the height in three places: left, center, and right. Use the longest measurement to make sure the blinds cover the entire window.
Depth: Check the depth of your window frame. Most inside-mount blinds require at least 3 inches (7.5 cm) of depth to fit properly. Measure at three points along the frame for consistency.
Step 2B: Measuring for outside mount blinds
Width: Measure the total width from one edge of the window frame to the other. If you want extra coverage, add 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) to the width. This ensures the blinds extend beyond the window for better light blocking.
Height: Measure the height from the top of the window frame to the bottom. Add about 3 inches (7.5 cm) above the frame to account for mounting brackets and proper positioning of the blinds, and 2 inches (5 cm) below the frame to minimize light seeping through.
Protrusions & brackets: Make sure to measure around any window handles or obstructions and include the space needed for the mounting brackets.
Not sure what size to order?
Enter your window opening and we will suggest the size to type in on the product page. This uses our standard allowances: outside mount adds 4 in (10.2 cm) to the width and 5 in (12.7 cm) to the height, and inside mount trims 0.25 in (0.6 cm) off the width so the blind moves freely.
Inside mount needs at least 3 in (7.5 cm) of frame depth for the brackets.
Special considerations for unique windows
For arched or angled windows, you may need to take additional measurements at various points to account for the shape. It's best to consult a specialist for these types of installations.
For bay windows or skylights, measure each section individually and consider using custom blinds designed specifically for these shapes.
Wide windows
Our timber, outdoor and roller blinds can be made up to 115 inches (292 cm) wide and 240 inches (610 cm) tall in a single piece. This is the longest piece an express courier will carry once it is boxed. For wider windows, order two or more equal sets side by side. Each product page lists its own limits.
